A SPECTACULAR UPPERCUT. PERRINE VALLI HAS SHARPENED HER GEOMETRY OF DESIRE AND ATTRACTION OF BODIES. THE LINES OF THE ARMS AND THE ANGLES OF SUPERIMPOSED OR INTERLOCKED HIPS SAY IT ALL. THIS CLIMATIC WORK IS A REAL GEM.

Description

Une femme au soleil is the third part in a series of six works initiated by Perrine Valli on the topic of desire, designed as a long-term cycle in which the desire for dance itself finds its rightful place.

Based on six paintings by Edward Hopper each of which lends its title to each choreographed work, the choreographer/dancer addresses the issue of the other and the relationship between bodies. After numerous solos and collaborative works, she continues her work in permanent tension between narration and abstraction, her research on the relationship between the inside and the outside and the simultaneous representation of the internal and the external are considered here like a metaphor for a sexual and desire-filled relationship between bodies. In Une femme au soleil, what is more specifically at play is female desire – Hopper’s eponymous painting features a naked woman, standing holding a cigarette in her hand in a sunlit room. “We don’t know if this is before or after the sexual act, or simply in her head, but our sexual imagination is triggered by an unmade bed, nudity and high-heel shoes at the foot of the bed”, says Perrine Valli.

On stage, backed by Polar’s instrumental music, two women and two men look for each other, come together and move apart, rub against and let go of each other. They are almost identical: the two female dancers on one side, the two male dancers on the other are dressed in the same way and resemble each other, because what counts here is not the matter of the couple but of how desire flows, where “true nature is actually not proximity but the approach; not a state but a movement […]” according to the words of philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy.
