THE SHOW IS THERE, FLOWING, IMPERIAL, LOGICAL FROM BEGINNING TO END, WITH A SORT OF QUIET DETERMINATION, A POWERFUL SENSUALITY THAT TAKES THE AUDIENCE FAR AWAY. NO DOUBT IN THE AUDIENCE: PERRINE VALLI’S SHOW HAS THE BEAUTY OF A FLAWLESS WORK.

Description

After shows marked by a desire to address politics and more specifically the question of sexual identity (Je pense comme une fille enlève sa robe about prostitution, Je ne vois pas la femme cachée dans la forêt, a trio about identity roles), Perrine Valli now lets the abstract and poetic part of her work (already present in her previous works) run free.

Built on the idea of a room, Si dans cette chambre un ami attend… focuses on what this space accommodates, from love to tears, sexuality to self-reflection, dreams to nightmares and real as well as metaphorical deaths, the death of love, the death of childhood. Returning to the solo for the occasion, which she has not practiced since 2007, Perrine Valli engages in a form of introspection which applies to the dancer as well as the female figure, addressed here in her intimacy, both personal and fantasised.

Very much inspired by American poet Emily Dickinson’s “Letters to the master, the friend, the tutor and the lover”, an excerpt of which actually gives its title to this work, Perrine Valli looks deeper into these figures in relation to this space, playing with a male interlocutor, reduced here to the role of extra, a shadow, a ghostly presence. Because what matters here are the projections, those that each of us makes in the empty space of our room, these multiple possibilities that emerge and disappear every day, these worrying visions that sometimes take over when limits are removed, highlighted here by a musical presence reminiscent of fantasy films. Like Balthus’ paintings, from which she sometimes takes inspiration for postures, Perrine Valli invites us into a mental and imaginary journey, steeped in mystery and ambiguity.
