At the end of her “Hors les Murs” residency programme in Tokyo, Perrine Valli took the opportunity to work in an unusual way, starting with a very Japanese concept: the experience of the void. Non-productivity enabled her to truly experience Japanese culture. The confrontation between the culture she has always lived in and that in which she was immersed for four months led to Déproduction, a work that combines two soli that evoke the cultural differences between Europe and Japan through words and dance.

The first work, performed by dancer Kazuma Glen Motomura, addresses the dancer’s trade and the political context in which s/he works as well as the position of the Japanese male in this specific artistic context. By talking about their mutual experiences, Perrine Valli has been struck by the difference between the professional situation of Japanese and European dancers. While Kazuma Glen Motomura is not paid for his services as a dancer and is forced to sell tickets for his own show at the risk of having to refund them himself, Perrine is paid to spend several months in Tokyo without having to dance or create…

The second work, performed by Airi Suzuki, addresses the cultural impact on female identity development through the topics of marriage, seduction and the experience of love. Major peculiarities remain between Japanese and European culture within the couple itself. The cult of childish femininity and submissiveness, for example, remain rather enigmatic codes for Westerners. Conversely, intercourse in full light and complete nudity are contrary to Japanese erotic codes.

Both productions, which result from conversations between Perrine Valli and the two Japanese dancers, address the body and movement and combine dance with text, image and speech.
